Tesla’s highly anticipated robotaxi reveal event, originally scheduled for August 8th, has been delayed until later in 2024. According to Bloomberg, the event is now expected to take place in southern California on October 10th. While specific details about what Tesla will reveal remain unclear, recent activity around Warner Bros.’ studio lot has sparked speculation. A Tesla hardware hacker recently reported that the company has been gathering fresh data around the site, possibly in preparation for the event.
Tesla is rumored to unveil a purpose-built self-driving vehicle, potentially with a design focused on urban transport. Some reports suggest the vehicle could feature a single bench seat or, alternatively, be as large as an 11-seater. The demonstration may take place on the studio lot, which could serve as a controlled environment that still mimics real-world conditions, complete with streets and traffic signs.
In addition to revealing the robotaxi, Tesla is expected to discuss the development of its own ride-hailing application and service platform, according to Bloomberg. This app could eventually integrate existing Tesla owners and their vehicles into the network, creating a peer-to-peer ride-hailing service. CEO Elon Musk has previously hinted at this idea, suggesting that Tesla could provide backend support for Tesla owners participating in the service, with a possible fee of 25 to 30 percent.
Earlier this year, Rimac unveiled a similar city-focused robotaxi concept called the Verne, which operates using a “Mothership” system. This system involves establishing a central hub for charging and maintenance before deploying the robotaxi fleet. Rimac’s concept includes a large entertainment and navigation screen for its two passengers. Speculation suggests Tesla’s compact robotaxi could be similar in size and purpose to Rimac’s Verne, but the final design remains a mystery.
In September 2024, a Warner Bros. employee allegedly captured a photo of a yellow, heavily camouflaged Tesla prototype being tested on the lot. The vehicle appeared to be a two-door hatchback, possibly seating two to four people. As the reveal date approaches, more information about Tesla’s future robotaxi is expected to emerge.
