Big Tech Hiring Rebounds in India Six Months After Record Lows

Big Tech hiring in India is showing signs of recovery six months after hitting record lows, particularly among FAAMNG companies—Facebook (Meta), Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and Google (Alphabet). According to data from specialist staffing firm Xpheno, accessed by Moneycontrol, active job openings from these companies have surged to 5,500 as of June 2024. This marks a notable increase from a record low of 200 job openings in December 2023, although it remains approximately 50% lower than typical levels seen in previous years.

The current job opportunities span various functions including engineering, IT, operations, sales programs, and project management. Bengaluru leads in demand with 31%, followed by Hyderabad (17%), Chennai (4%), and Delhi NCR (4%).

Prasadh MS, head of workforce research at Xpheno, noted that while there are positive signs of recovery, hiring numbers are still slower compared to tech services companies. Sekhar Garisa, CEO of Foundit (formerly Monster), attributed this uptick in hiring to the resurgence of digital transformation plans among big customers across sectors like manufacturing, retail, and BFSI.

Despite widespread layoffs and the shelving of long-term projects amid economic challenges, global tech giants have maintained focused hiring for strategic initiatives. Companies like Microsoft, Google, Netflix, Meta, and Amazon have adapted by shifting some overseas roles to India for cost optimization and organizational restructuring.

Looking ahead, there is optimism that recruitment efforts will continue to expand over the next few years, driven by growth in AI, new-age technologies, data analytics, and cloud platforms. This strategic shift towards India underscores its role as a key growth market for tech companies despite global economic uncertainties.
